Cinema programme for the Bootle Gaumont from 1962.

Although by this time television in the home had become more popular, we can see from this cinema programme that the showing of older films or re releases was still common place. Notice that the first double programme of the month were two re releases; ’Witness For The Prosecution’ from 1957 and ‘The Far Country’ from 1954.

The biblical epic ‘Barabbas’ from 1962 was at the time on general release.

Cinema program from Boole Gaumont February 1962. Films showing at the cinema at that time included two 'abridged versions' this means that the films had been edited into shorter versions often in order to fit around the main feature

Below is a scan of an original cinema programme for Bootle Gaumont Cinema from February 1962.

The ‘X’ rated main feature ‘Grip of Fear ‘ states underneath ‘Adults only’

Notice that two of the supporting features were re releases; ’Operation Mad Ball,’ 1957, and ’3 Coins in a Fountain,’ 1954 and were abridged versions. This means that the film had been edited or condensed to fit in with the timings of the main feature and other film screenings.

Very few original pieces of cinema memorabilia have survived over the years, but through the project we have been able to unearth and scan some great pieces which may have other wise been discared. Here we have a Cinmea Flyer from 1962

Flyers would sometimes be handed out to cinema goers to promote new films being shown at the cinema. Very few original flyers from old local picture houses have survived, and as with other cinema memorabilia much has been discared over the years. The Going to the Pictures project has asked people to unearth surviving pieces of cinema memorabilia and has been fortunate enough to be able to scan and display some original pieces through this website.

A flyer handed to cinemagoers at the Bootle Gaumont for the forthcoming 1962 films
‘The Day of the Triffids’ and ‘Legions Last Patrol’

The film ‘ Day of the Triffids’ was based on a famous John Wyndham sci-fi novel of the same name.

Interestingly the main theme to the supporting film ‘The Legions Last Patrol’ was released as a single in the UK and got to number 4 in the charts in 1963.

The film had an ‘X’ certificate on release and is regularly shown on television, however on the film’s DVD release it was given a 15 certificate.

Flyer for the Boolte Gaumont Cinema which has been kept for over 50 years and scanned especially for the Going to the Pictures Project. The flyer from 1961 is advertising a future presentation of the film 'Cape Fear'

As well as advertising in local newspapers and cinema programmes flyers or leaflets were also sometimes produced and handed out to cinema goers to advertise current and pre- release films. Many of these have been lost and thrown away over the years.

Below is a scanned copy of a flyer handed out to cinemagoers advertising films from March 1961. The films showing in the cinema at that time were ’Cape Fear,’ the main attraction and also ‘Danger by my Side’. This flyer was distributed at the Bootle Gaumont Cinema and has been stored for over 50 years.

The film ‘Cape Fear’ starred Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, and was subsequently remade in 1991, starring Robert DeNiro and Nick Nolte.

The original film received an ‘X’certificate on release but it is regularly shown on television, however on the film’s DVD release it was given a 15 certificate.

Typical program from Gaumont Cinema Bootle 1962, advertising films that where to be shown at the cinema during the month of August.

Through the project we have been collecting and scanning cinema memorabilia. This is a copy of a programme from the Bootle Gaumont Cinema from 1962

Due to the fact that it was the school holidays the cinema was showing a number of Walt Disney films namely ‘Bon Voyage’ and ‘Big Red.”

Interestingly, the film ‘Big Red’ was supported by one of Disney’s famous full length feature cartoons ‘Dumbo’ which was originally released in 1941.
